PIT STOP DATA

The Burger Cold War Now Has 19 Front-Line Exits

By Jake Boyles · August 26, 2026 · From the Pit Stop database of 700,000+ places at all 19,675 US interstate exits

In-N-Out and Whataburger fans do not argue like McDonald's and Burger King customers. They argue like rival faiths. For decades geography kept the peace: In-N-Out stayed west, Whataburger stayed in Texas and the South, and never the Double-Double and the Patty Melt had to share a parking lot.

Updated Aug 31 with a fresh map and the full state-by-state table. The front has grown from 14 contested exits to 19 in five days of data refreshes. This post now tracks the war as it moves.

That peace is ending, and our database can show you exactly where.

In-N-Out holds 242 interstate exits outright, Whataburger holds 612, and they coexist at just 19.

Seventeen are in Texas. The other two are in Nashville, Tennessee — In-N-Out's eastern beachhead, planted directly on exits Whataburger had already claimed.

Notice what's missing: California. Whataburger has never crossed into In-N-Out's homeland, which stays a perfect 159 to 0. Every contested exit sits in Whataburger country, and I-35 and its Dallas splits carry nine of the nineteen. But calling this a one-directional invasion turned out to be wrong, because of what the data shows one state west.

The Arizona surprise

Arizona sits directly next to California. It should be In-N-Out country. It is not: Whataburger leads Arizona 24 interstate exits to 15. While everyone watched In-N-Out march east into Texas, Whataburger quietly built the bigger footprint in In-N-Out's own backyard. This is a two-front war where each army is deep in the other's territory, they just have not run into each other in Arizona yet.

The undercards matter too. Colorado has flipped In-N-Out, Oklahoma and New Mexico are solid Whataburger with no red anywhere, and In-N-Out scouts have reached Georgia and South Carolina one and two exits at a time. The Southeast is the next front.

Why Nashville matters

The two Tennessee exits are the tell. In-N-Out's eastward expansion put its first Tennessee locations directly on top of exits Whataburger had already claimed, which means the overlap map is about to grow for the first time in decades. The burger cold war finally has a front that moves. We'll re-run this query as it does.
